School of Fine Furniture

Stuart has thrown the workshop doors open to give you the opportunity to enjoy the challenges that fine woodworking has to offer. We cater for every level of woodworker, from novice to advance. We deliberately keep classes small [max 6]. They’re a great way to learn this increasingly popular craft in a relaxed and creative atmosphere..

Getting Started

Often it can be very daunting starting something completely new. Our introductory course has been designed for those with little or no experience in woodworking. They are designed to give you the confidence and an understanding of the tolerances used to create fine furniture. The classes run in the evenings, and are conducted in 8 week blocks. Emphasis is placed on mastering basic hand techniques and working with various timber species. By the end of the course you will have made several simple pieces, and be competent in tuning and using a hand plane, gluing, sharpening, sanding and finishing.

And After That?

At the conclusion of the introductory course, most students opt to continue their classes. Once you have grasped the basic principles, we then look at more advanced techniques such as hand cut dovetails, mortice and tenons and other complicated joinery. Classes will also focus on the use of machinery to supplement the hand techniques you are mastering.
In the advanced classes you will also be introduced to the challenges of furniture design and construction, and will be encouraged to design and make your own pieces. Due to our small class size (max 6), Stuart is always on hand to guide you along each step.

Stuart is an experienced teacher of fine woodwork, having had the opportunity to train many apprentices. His easy going nature makes classes a pleasure to come to, and a great way to unwind in a relaxed atmosphere with like minded people. If you are interested in enrolling, please go to the contact page and have a chat to Stuart.
